Is It Worth It To Arrive Early To An ISST Basketball Game?
By Luca B., Grade 9
In early march, MIS hosted the ISST basketball tournament. A wildly competitive sports event to see which school is the best. The bleachers are packed, and the school spirit is high. But have you ever wondered if it would be worth it to arrive early? Well that’s exactly what the Grade 9 Journalism class did so that we can give you the answer to that burning question.

Firstly, I’ll tell you the cons to arriving early. The first and most important is that there isn’t any action going on. Even though you can see the players warm up, you don’t get the full game experience until after the practice is over (which can sometimes feel like forever). Another con that you can easily fix, is arriving by yourself. If you come alone and early to a basketball game, it can get boring real quick. Other than socialising with other students or teachers who also came early, there’s not much else you can do. To fix this, bring a friend or two. To avoid the awkwardness of sitting alone in the stands, if you bring some friends, you can chat the time away while you wait for the highly anticipated game to start.

Moving on to the pros of arriving early at a basketball game. There are two major advantages to going early. First, you get the best seats in the house. If you arrive early enough, you can get practically whatever seats you like, and if you are one of the first, you might even be able to sit court side. Another huge pro is that you don’t have to wait in any lines. 9/10 times, there is a food stand at ISST tournaments in the FAB, and they are always very popular. But who likes waiting in line? Well if you’re there early, then you can get your food and drinks right away. Which leads me to my last word of advice. Bring money! There is no worse feeling than being at a sports event, wanting to get a hot dog, and realising that you and your friends don’t have money.
So that begs the question. Is it worth it to arrive early? The short answer is yes. However, you have to be smart about it. If you want to watch two schools who are not MIS, then you really only have to arrive 5-10 minutes early to get all of the advantages of arriving early listed above. However, if you are going to an MIS game, I would recommend arriving at least 20-30 minutes early because the bleachers will fill up quick, and when the bleachers fill up, the lines get longer.
