How the California Wildfires Have an Effect on Our MIS Community

By Scarlett T., Grade 9

The 2025 wildfires around Los Angeles, California, have a devastating effect on families and loved ones worldwide, not just those in fire zones. Thousands of people have lost their homes, forcing families to evacuate, sometimes across states and even countries. Sadly, many lives have been lost, leaving families mourning across the U.S. around the world. Many people with relatives and loved ones in California anxiously wait for updates on their loved ones.

The California Wildfires also have a huge effect worldwide and on members of our community. Many students at MIS have connections to California, either having lived there, visited, or have loved ones there. The wildfires not only cause distress on the U.S. but also for many students around the world.

“It’s very scary to see people I know going through such tragedy, and it especially heartbreaking to not be able to help them and have to sit and watch from across the world. My parents and family have been extremely worried and anxiously waiting each day to hear news from the people we know who are suffering,” said Luca B., Grade 9.

The financial trouble of the wildfires is astonishing. With losses between $28 billion and $75 billion, and economic damages possibly reaching $275 billion, this disaster is also posed to be the most cost natural catastrophe in U.S. history.  These amounts have significant impact on the global financial markets, especially the insurance industries.

The fires have released huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global greenhouse glass levels. This worsens climate change leading to more frequent and severe weather worldwide.

California is also a huge hub for global supply, particularly in technology and entertainment. The wildfires have interrupted major ports, this has led to delays and shortages in goods around the world. These goods range from electronics to food products, affecting businesses and people overall worldwide.

“Many of my family members and family friends have had to evacuate from their homes, a few even lost their homes and are struggling to find new ones. It hurts to see people I care about going through such a distressful time in their life, especially when I can’t do anything to help them,” Skylee R., Grade 9, said.

The devastation caused by California wildfires extends beyond immediate destruction. Families have been displaced, lives have been lost, and the environment is suffering. How the wildfires in California affect students at MIS shows how the effects and destruction from the wildfires in California affect much more than immediate damage.
