What Everyone Thinks About the New Cafeteria Company

By Keira O, Melina M, Bella K, Grade 9

The cafeteria is new and improved and both staff and students have been sharing their opinions. Follow us as we explore what’s new, what’s been going on in the new place so far with the new company, Genuss & Harmonie.

Why Is Lunch More Expensive?

The most common complaint about the cafeteria is that it is too expensive. Many people are upset about the increase in the prices without knowing the reason behind why they went up. We were curious too, so we asked questions and discovered that there are many important reasons for the higher prices.

“When you look at the last five years, you can say since Corona food costs in some pieces, they’re expanding since 60% on top and clear this we don’t use it to ourselves,” Ms Corinna Schöller, a cafeteria staff member, said.

She explained that risen food costs are not kept but get passed on: Genuss und Harmonie is now buying fresh ingredients, which are more nutritious but do cost more money. There are also more students in MIS now, which requires more lunches to be prepared. As the amount of food produced increases, so does the number of needed staff.

A New System for Paying

The cafeteria staff also explained the new chip system. For them it is a good change overall, since it makes their jobs easier with students paying before getting their food, which helps avoid problems with unpaid bills like last year. It also helps the company keep better track of money and plan for food costs.

Some staff mentioned that the system feels a bit slower at first, but that is mostly because more students are eating lunch this year, not because of the chips themselves. They also pointed out that new taxes and packaging rules add to the overall costs. Even though the food is a bit more expensive, the staff said the new company puts more effort into making meals fresher and tastier. Overall, they think the changes are positive and that the new system will work even better once everyone gets used to it.

What Do Students Think?

Students seem to like the new cafeteria system and how the food has improved. One student said:

“I think it was a big improvement from the hot lunch last year because the food is just better.”

Although some students mention some small issues, like the food being unhealthy with cookies and ice cream, most agree the quality and taste of the food has improved. Also, the cafeteria lunches look better than before. The general opinion is summed up well by another student:

“It’s not perfect, but it’s better.”
