Wall of Will Inspires MIS Athletes to Strike for the WIN

By Anintika B., Grade 9

First impressions are what makes or breaks your opinion on something. How you perceive something for the first time is often how you will perceive it for the rest of your life. And in the beginning of January, when the new Wall of Will was revealed, a lot of first impressions were being made. The Wall of Will is an incredibly detailed mural stretching across the walls of the FAB, displaying strong female German athletes from various sports. It gives information about their background, achievements and identity, and was made simply for the purpose of giving young girls good role models and encouraging female athletes to continue with their sport. That is why, when the Wall was constructed, it was especially important for us to collect the first impressions of the people who saw it. Especially, the female athletes of MIS, who were chosen by Sports Illustrated magazine to give their account of the Wall.

“For all the pride and intense atmosphere – it’s like, amazing, you know,” Anastasia S. Grade 9, said, “You start feeling better about sports, start seeing the colours of what it actually can be like.”

Many people were of the opinion, that the wall was incredibly inspiring for female athletes as it inspired them to get out on the field and continue to give their most at every tournament and practice. It caused a fervor of athleticism between the students at MIS, motivating, and energizing them.

“I think that the wall is super colorful, and really pretty, and overall, just very inspirational for all the female athletes here. It was so beautiful,” Skye R. Grade 9, said.

Furthermore, the bright colors and creative layout of the wall made it very aesthetic and pleasant to look at. Students were impressed with the ingenuity of the wall’s design, displaying the diverse range of female athletes displayed across the wall. It gave them an opportunity to take a moment and to reflect on what sports mean to them.

“It’s a way to clear your mind. Just think about the sport, and expressing yourself, and doing what makes you happy,” Tilde E. Grade 11, said.

Students overall shared the same sentiment. The wall motivates them to keep going and makes them think more deeply about what sports really mean to them. Answers varied, but the overall idea was the same. For the students – the female athletes – of MIS, sports are a way to exercise, express yourself, push yourself to your limits, and have fun doing something you genuinely enjoy. The Wall of Will is a testament to all of these elements of sport. It brought people together and allowed them to bond in their shared love for the wide range of different forms of physical activities they relish. And our Wall is not the only one to do this. The Wall of Will is a project that spans across a number of schools in Germany; it is covered by Sports Illustrated magazine, to be published in their March 2025 edition. sure to check it out! And be sure to check out the upcoming articles on the Buchhof Bulletin, for more details about the various athletes displayed!
