On the 29th of January, MIS basketball varsity teams, both boys and girls, played BIS, our rival school in the Munich area. This was not just another game; it was an attempt to increase attendance and foster school spirit. In order to do this, the organizers changed a few things, such as giving out clappers, moving the bleachers to improve visibility, and providing refreshments for the audience.

The attempt to boost support for the teams was valued by both staff and students.
“I think it’s really important that we support the team, and they feel supported,” Head of School Mr. Thomas said.

A bigger crowd can increase player self-confidence and make the game more entertaining for both teams. Additionally, the visiting team felt the heightened atmosphere in the gym.
“The energy is fantastic; even as the away team, it’s enjoyable and exciting,” said Liz Shell, head coach of BIS, about the atmosphere.
The audience’s encouragement increased the spirit of competition, making the experience better for both players and spectators. A lot of students were thrilled about the initiatives to boost school spirit.
“I like it. I think it’s good that we’re showing support,” Matilda E., Grade 11, said of the initiative.

It was evident that more students were attending and supporting their teams as a result of the recent changes. Though some players viewed it as an opportunity rather than a challenge, others found performing in front of a larger audience to be nerve-racking.
“I’m not nervous at all,” said Grade 11 player Samander N. with assurance when asked if he was anxious about the larger crowd. “The key is mentality,” he continued.
The players on the court weren’t the only ones experiencing the thrill. A large portion of the crowd was excited to see more people attending the game.

“I’m thrilled about everyone who is watching and grateful for it,” said Nicole, grade 11th. Her words demonstrated the increasing interest in MIS sports and the impact of a supportive crowd.
Beyond just the game itself, this event marked a shift in school spirit. The effort to enhance the game-day experience was a step toward building a stronger sense of community at MIS. Whether it was the noise from the clappers, the cheering from the bleachers, or the energy on the court, it was clear that this change had made a huge difference.
Looking forward, it remains to be seen whether these changes will become a permanent feature of MIS basketball games. However, the overwhelmingly positive response suggests that students and staff alike are eager to keep this going. By fostering a culture of support and enthusiasm, MIS is creating an environment where school pride can thrive—one game at a time.
